Paddle Boarding In Paradise

One morning, as I walked along the beach near my home, I was struck with awe at the sight of a paddle boarder as he glided over the calm sea, the sunrise his backdrop. That peaceful and picturesque moment lingered in my mind for the rest of the day. I knew I had to try it for myself!

Three separate attempts to play swan on the water produced nothing but fails. Either the water was too rough, the water sport shop was closed for lunch or one of the boards was in disrepair. I began to wonder if my time would ever come try this popular Caribbean activity.

photo-23

In the meantime, as I scrolled through images of friends on Facebook out boarding across the turquoise waters, my heart longed to have a paddling adventure of my own. As luck would have it, I ran into an old friend who had developed a passion for the sport herself. She had two boards and encouraged me to join her. It took hardly a half second of convincing before I was booking a private lesson with her.

It was a classic beach scene from a movie as we pulled up to the bay in Puerto Aventuras, a community fifteen minutes south of Playa del Carmen. Her jeep coasted up to the path, boards strapped to the roof rack. The smooth-as-glass ocean drew me near as I scrambled to the shoreline lugging paddles and beach bags.

The long-anticipated moment had finally arrived! It required every ounce of patience to wait to hear the necessary beginner’s instructions. My concentration seemed to be more focused on the question of whether I would be able to stand up and hold my balance on the teetering board.

photo 2-14

At last, we placed our paddle boards in the pristine water and took a test drive around the scenic cove. She guided me through the quiet canal areas past a magnificent stretch of homes lining the waters’ edge. Turning back towards our starting point, we paddled facing the direction of the vast, greenish-blue seascape. Being out on the still water, under azure skies, gently rowing and taking it all in, I let out a deep sigh of satisfaction. The experience had definitely lived up to and surpassed all of my expectations.

We spent an hour gliding, laughing, and practicing yoga poses atop our boards. The Mayan Riviera sun, as usual, was a constant companion on this glorious morning. I reluctantly left, but with a wide grin slapped across my face and resolved to join my friend again soon. These simple connections with nature are what fill my life with the purest sense of joy. These bonding moments with Mother Earth in all her glory are precisely what my husband and I had envisioned in our wildest dreams and what we were willing to risk our too comfortable and convenient lives for.

photo 1-18

As a friend recently declared after her first exhilarating paddle boarding session, I can “Knock that off my bucket list!” Now on to the next!

If you enjoy the outdoors and are planing a trip to “The Heart of the Mayan Riviera” in the future, I highly recommend that you add paddle boarding to your list of things to do. There are several companies offering lessons and board rentals speckled along the sublime Mayan Riviera coastline. In town, paddle boards are available to rent for approximately $25 USD per hour. If the open sea is a tad intimidating for you, there are tours which include rentals and transportation to calmer lagoon or cenote waters near Playa del Carmen.

Achiote Pork Tacos

ab8dcad561ae48a7de75695456ccab7d

Cochinita Pibil is a must try dish when visiting the Yucatán Peninsula. The tender, pulled pork has a smokey, slightly tangy flavor and is commonly served in soft corn tortillas.

The traditional method of cooking Cochinita Pibil uses a technique which involves marinating pork in an achiote rub, made from annatto seed, a plant found in the tropics. The meat is wrapped in a banana leaf and placed in an underground barbecue pit filled with wood. The pit is then covered with stone and the pork is left to roast for several hours.

If this process sounds somewhat daunting, have no fear. Here is a simplified recipe you can use in your own kitchen to produce similar, flavorful results.

Achiote Tacos

achiote_roasted_pork_tacos-640x460

  • 1.5 pounds boneless pork
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1 block achiote (the size of one square of baker’s chocolate)
  • corn tortillas
  • cilantro
  • lime wedges
  • diced onion
  • radishes, sliced
  • avocado, cubed

Cut pork into 2 inch pieces and place in a large pot with vinegar, garlic, salt, oregano, achiote and enough water to cover meat completely. Boil on low heat for 2 hours or until the liquid has been reduced, leaving the tender pork in a thick, vivid orange sauce. While the meat is cooking, prepare the cilantro, onion, radish, avocado and lime garnishes. Shred the pork using a fork and serve in warmed corn tortillas with a side of rice and beans.

Chicken is also a savory substitution for this Mayan specialty.

* Look for Achiote in the spice aisle in local supermarkets here in Playa del Carmen. It comes in an orange, rectangle package. Annatto seed can also sometimes be found in specialty stores or in the international aisle elsewhere in North America.

A Little Piece Of The World I Call “Heaven”

In honor of the ‘I Love Playa del Carmen’ contest presented by Bric Vacation Rentals, we interviewed Michelle, a recurring visitor at one of the city’s most sought after luxury condos, ‘The Elements’.  Michelle first became familiar with Playa del Carmen twenty years ago during its initial blossoming period from rustic, fishing village to vibrant, young city.

Colonio Colosio, Playa del Carmen, 1995

She fell in love with this part of the world she describes as “heaven” and was thrilled to have the opportunity to purchase the stunning Garden House 1, which sits nearest to ‘The Elements’ exclusive beach club.  As the green-blue waters of the Caribbean Sea and pristine beaches are the most compelling aspects of Playa which lure her back time and time again, owning a vacation haven steps from the beach was a must.

Michelle has passionately created within her retreat, an atmosphere of serenity with its warm color palette and zen-inspiring Thai accents.  It is her home away from home in which all cares of the world tend to diminish upon entering.  The striking, turquoise views from her living room and soothing ambience immediately fill her with a sense of peace.

The views from Garden House 1 in ‘The Elements’

At the time she was introduced to ‘The Elements’, Michelle was impressed by the impeccable grounds, ocean views and desirable location. After spending a considerable amount of time here, she is captivated by the tangible invigorating energy – a result of the natural fusion of Mother Nature’s most remarkable components- Water, Sun, Wind and Fire.  There is a majestic air surrounding Playa del Carmen which has allowed her and her family to stockpile many cherished moments into their memory banks over the years.

A longtime visitor to “The Gem of the Mayan Riviera,”  Michelle has watched the town transform from a once sleepy village with dirt roads to a thriving, world-renowned vacation destination. Although she fondly remembers the “old Playa,” she has welcomed the growth and appreciates the abundance of activities and entertainment options that are now available.

The bustling 5th Avenue today

As a business owner, Michelle looks forward to her escapes to paradise where she can relax and unwind.  In a fast-paced world, Playa offers the perfect opportunity to slip into vacation bliss.  With amenities such as pool-side spa services and an on-site concierge, stresses have a knack of quickly fading away.  One comfortably eases into a rejuvenation period, when ‘Shall we lounge by the pool, or by the sea today?’ is among one of the toughest decisions to be made.

If duty does call, Michelle is able to take advantage of the Wifi and on premise business center with its floor-to-ceiling windows and mesmerizing ocean views. ‘The Elements’ enviable location, just off the trendy, newly-developed section of 5th Avenue, gives guests convenient accessibility to all the attributes which make Playa del Carmen such an attractive beach getaway.

Not only is Michelle a stone’s throw distance from the pristine beaches, but she is also grateful to be walking distance to hundreds of fabulous restaurants which line the famously effervescent avenue. When she first set foot in Playa, there were only a handful of eateries scattered in the area.  Now there are over 700 restaurants spread over the downtown core, which ranks selecting a place for dinner, as perhaps the second toughest choice she might be faced with on a typical day in paradise.

Having her daughter as her frequent travel companion, Michelle values these memorable trips to Playa del Carmen.  She is delighted to be present to witness the on-going metamorphosis of this city she holds so dear to her heart and expects to create many more special moments with her family and friends in which to savor forever.

Passing time on the alabaster shores and translucent waters is indeed an effective way to soothe a weary soul.  However, in the heat of the midday, if you opt not for a siesta in the shade, an array of spas speckle ‘La Quinta’ (5th Avenue’s Spanish name).  An air-conditioned escape for a relaxing massage, facial or nail treatment makes for an appealing break from the powerful rays of the Mexican sun.

After the sun goes down and casts a shadow over the city, the night comes alive on 5th.  This bustling street stretches across more than twenty five blocks through the effervescent core of the young city of Playa del Carmen.  Enjoying a fresh-churned treat on a comfy couch outside a gelato parlor provides an excellent  opportunity to partake in a interesting people-watching session.

It is not uncommon for passersby to be startled by a statuesque Mayan dressed in full costume, with lavish feathered headdress, jaguar patterned face paint and all.  These playful characters seem to take great pleasure in coming to life just as unsuspecting pedestrians walk by.  Other cultural (and not so fearsome) figures you are apt to spot on La Quinta are the famous Mariachi.  Their stringed instruments, trumpets and powerful voices intensify the genuine atmosphere and alluring vibe of 5th Avenue.

Tequila – A Time-Honored Aspect of Mexico’s Proud Heritage

Tequila

There is a whole lot more to tequila than shooting Jose Cuervo off the belly of a girl at a frat party!  The history of the spirit is as rich as the smooth flavor of a good tequila.  In fact, special tequila glasses or brandy snifters are recommended in order to experience the full essence of this powerful elixir.

The story of tequila dates back nearly 1000 years, when Aztec’s discovered tequila’s ancestor, pulque. After being struck by lightning, someone noticed the inside of the agave plant had been cooked and had produced a sweet, mildly alcoholic juice. This syrup, usually reserved for high priests and royalty, was believed to be a gift from the gods. The Aztec people even went so far as to offer human sacrifices to ensure there would be a continuous supply!

Aztecstequila

The first actual factory to introduce the distilling process was established in the town of Tequila, Jalisco in the 1600s.  It is in this region, with its rich, red volcanic soil, that the particular agave plant prefers to grow and thrive.  Although, most of the production in Mexico occurs in Jalisco, four other states, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit and Tamaulipas, have been granted permission by the Mexican government (who holds the exclusive rights to the name “Tequila”) to produce and distribute the distinguished relative of Mezcal.

Farmeragave

A typical growth cycle of a blue agave is seven years, after which farmers, known as “Jimadores”, strip the heart of the plant of its leaves. A mature heart, which resembles a pineapple and can weigh 80-200 pounds at harvest time, is minced and steamed.  During the ancient distilling process, “Tahona,” (still used by some producers today), a two-ton volcanic stone wheel crushes the cooked agave.  Next, the pressed fibers and juice are collected and placed inside pine wood casks in order to create “mosto” or a basic liquid. This fermented liquid is then distilled twice, once with the agave fibers and then again without.  The remaining liquid is then filtered in the final stage before bottling.  In some cases, the work of sixty or more sets of seasoned hands is necessary to cultivate and manufacture the finished product.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Just as true champagne comes from the Champagne region of France, in order to labelled Tequila, it must be produced in Mexico.  Contrary to popular myth, a bottle of quality tequila will not contain a worm at the bottom.  The “gusano” is the larvae of the type of moth which resides on the agave plant, and the idea to put it inside the bottle was conceived as a marketing gimmick for mezcal.

Tequila falls into two categories which are then divided into five classes.  From 100% Blue Agave and Tequila Mixto (a mix that must contain 51% blue agave), comes 1) Tequila Blanco/Silver/White – clear tequila that has not been aged and is normally bottled immediately after being distilled. 2) Tequila Joven/Gold – White tequila that has not been aged but to which colorants and flavorings such as oak tree extracts and sugar syrup have been added. 3) Tequila Reposado/Rested or Aged – has been left to age in wood from a period of two-twelve months. 4) Tequila Anejo/Extra-Aged or Vintage – mandates that the tequila has remained in oak barrels for a minimum of one year for a more sophisticated taste. 5)  Tequila Extra Anejo/Ultra-Aged – has been aged for a period of three years or more.  The Guiness World Record for most expensive bottle ever sold is held by a private collector who paid $225,000.00 for a Platinum and White-Gold Tequila.

expensivetequila

Studies have shown that if consumed in moderation, tequila can reduce the risk of developing diabetes by 30-40% and can cut the risk of dementia by 37%.  Of course we know well that over-indulgence on Mexico’s beloved national drink can perhaps lead to temporary memory loss, so please drink responsibly.

Agua de Jamaica – Mexico’s Most Loved Afternoon Chiller

Hibiscus_flower

Agua de Jamaica is made from the dried hibiscus flower.  It is virtually impossible not to see it on the list of beverages in most restaurants in Mexico. This refreshingly tangy drink is almost as visually appealing as the bold, red flower itself.  It can served as a hot tea or cold, over ice and takes only a few minutes to prepare in your own kitchen!

Agua de Jamaica

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup of dried hibiscus flower (packaged in bags, found in any grocery store usually near dried chile section)
  • 8 thin slices of ginger
  • 1/2 a cinnamon stick
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • 1L of water for the concentrate
  • 3L of water
  • Sugar, to your preference (apprx. 1/2 cup) or alternative such as honey or agave nectar

Directions:

Bring 1L of water to boiling with ginger and cinnamon.  Add the jamaica leaves and remove from heat.  Allow liquid to cool completely.  Strain the concentrate into a large pitcher and discard remains. Add sweetener, lime juice and remaining 3L of water.  The beverage is most flavorful when refrigerated overnight.

Enjoy over ice with a lime wheel garnish!

Besides being a favorite afternoon refresher, Agua de Jamaica has many natural health benefits.  This caffeine free concoction has been known to reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol, is rich in Vitamin C and promotes digestive and bowel regularity.

* It is highly recommended that the tea or chilled versions not be consumed by pregnant or nursing women. Please check with your doctor if you are taking medication as hibiscus has a tendency to react with certain drugs.
